Xinzhong  Yao “ An Introduction to Confucianism” states that “Confucianism is not merely an official orthodoxy” (38) Yao explains that Confucianism is “both conservative and radical, retrogressive and progressive”. He explains the non-conventional nature of Confucianism and that there are divergent views which shows it is not an official ‘orthodoxy.’
